足摺岬には、大地の隆起と過去の気候変動によって形づくられた海成段丘が広くみられます。段丘面のふちでは、潮風の影響を直接受ける厳しい環境にマサキやトベラ、ウバメガシなどが風の力で樹形が陸側へ撫でつけられたように変形した風衝低木林をつくっています。

Coastal wind-shaped forest

The coastal terrace of Cape Ashizuri was formed by geologic and climate changes over time. Consistently assailed by sea wind, trees such as Euonymus japonicus, Pittosporum tobira, and Quercus phillyraeoides that grow in this harsh environment on the edge of the terrace make up this wind-shaped forest. The shape of the trees has been altered by the wind in such a way that it appears as though they have been brushed inland.
