ブナ科　　学名：Quercus phillyreoides

姥目樫。主に暖地の海岸地帯に生える常緑小高木で、材は堅く備長炭の原材料や宗田節を燻す際の薪として重用されます。足摺岬では潮風の影響を直接受ける厳しい環境にマサキやトベラ等と共に風衝低木林をつくっています。

Evergreens that predominantly grow in warm coastal areas. Its wood is strong, and is used as firewood to smoke sodabushi. It is also used to produce high-grade charcoal. In the harsh environment of Cape Ashizuri that is consistently assailed by sea wind, along with Euonymus japonicus and Pittosporum tobira, this tree makes up this wind-shaped forest.
